With a grant from the Big Cats Initiative, National Geographic Explorer Thandiwe Mweetwa studied lion populations in her native Zambia. She is also pursuing her master’s degree in natural resources conservation.

The Big Cats Initiative is dedicated to protecting critical big cat species and the habitats that they call home. To date, the program has awarded over 100 grants across 27 countries to scientists and conservationists working to save big cats in the wild.
