The Home of the Explorer

As the Society launches a new era of exploration, we are taking steps to expand our global impact by reimagining our headquarters in Washington, D.C. The most significant expansion in our history will transform Base Camp into a dynamic hub for collaboration and convening, and create a powerful new platform to amplify our Explorers’ work.

At its core, Base Camp is and will always be the Home of the Explorer — a place for changemakers to return from the field, share what they have learned, and connect with each other and the wider public. Our new campus will supercharge their efforts to illuminate and protect our world and foster an even stronger, more collaborative Explorer community.

An experience to inspire the Explorer in everyone

Base Camp will activate the National Geographic Society’s history and mission with a must-see public destination called the Museum of Exploration. Through cutting-edge technology and powerful storytelling, visitors will be transported all over the world and witness our commitment to understanding and caring for the planet. Students will see themselves as the Explorers and solution-seekers of tomorrow with exciting interactives and learning opportunities. This unique attraction will provide incredible new ways to introduce our Explorers to a wider audience, amplifying their achievements and rallying the public to support their mission — and ours.

A space to convene the changemakers of our time

Base Camp will also be a global convening space, bringing together experts in science, conservation, and policy to seek innovative solutions for our planet. In the nation’s capital, we will connect Explorers with key leaders from all over the world, advancing our goals and driving meaningful change for the planet.
