Almost all of Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, lies near sea level. This makes Maldives the "lowest" country in the world, and threatened by sea level rise. The nation is hoping to buy land in India, Sri Lanka, or Australia so native Maldivians can be safely evacuated if the islands begin to slip underwater.
