  • On May 12, 1551, the National University of Lima was established in Lima, Peru. Today, the school is the National University of San Marcos. This institution, chartered by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is the oldest university in the Americas.
     
    The National University of San Marcos has operated continuously for more than 500 years, and is the leading institute of higher education in Peru. One of its graduates, the novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010.
