In this hands-on activity students learn how Newton’s Second and Third Laws of Motion play a part in how a rocket lifts off. Students learn how engineers apply these laws to rocket design and launch parameters. 


Students will create a water rocket and experiment with different levels of fuel (water) to propel it. After testing and modifying their rockets and propellent, students will discuss how they applied their knowledge of Newton’s Second and Third Laws of Motion to improve the distance that the rocket traveled.

Be sure to collect the teacher gathered the materials and select a suitable launch area (described in the educator guide) a week in advance of the scheduled classroom visit.
