  • On October 3, 2013, JASON Learning presented a day of live, interactive programs designed to complement the Connect! Transform the Future project, which aims to teach kids about the future of energy and inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists. Each of the four live events was approximately 45 minutes in length. You can watch each archived video from the media carousel above.

Building on JASON Live's STEM Careers series, these events focused on careers related to renewable wind energy. Wind turbines are becoming more and more sophisticated and can be connected to the industrial Internet to take advantage of network technologies that help increase efficiency. Alongside these developments, the skills required to design, build, maintain, and manage wind farms are constantly evolving, and the career opportunities related to wind energy are growing at a rapid rate.

During the live event, JASON connected audiences with STEM role models who are currently working in the wind energy industry. These role models answered live and pre-submitted questions from students, teachers, and science center visitors.

JASON Live's host, Patty Kim, was joined in the JASON studios by Kathleen O'Brien. Kathleen manages the Electric Power Systems group at the GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, New York. Her group focuses on all aspects of power systems engineering including the integration of renewables to the electric grid, High-Voltage DC technologies, protection, wide-area measurement systems, and power system analytics. She holds a Dr.-Ing. degree from Dresden University of Technology, Germany, and MSEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a BSEE from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The event also featured STEM role models currently working at wind parks and the control center that monitors them, including operations managers, turbine technicians, wind farm support specialists, and power systems operators. Click here to download the original promotional flyer.
