National Geographic magazine's "Population 7 Billion" was a year-long series examining specific challenges and solutions to the issues we face as a result of the worldwide population reaching and exceeding seven billion in 2011. This special collection includes resources from both National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Education for teachers to use in their social studies and geography classrooms. The National Geographic magazine resources include a downloadable National Geographic map insert, a video tour of the map, and a link to the November 2011 issue the map first appeared in. The National Geographic Education resources include interactive mapping tools that will allow educators and learners to delve deeper into a geographic perspective of Africa and the Great Lakes region. The NG Education mapping tools include:
- a MapMaker Kit that educators and learners can use to assemble large-scale maps of Africa and immerse themselves in explorations of the continent;
- links to themes from the MapMaker Interactive, an online interactive map that allows students to explore data layers related to population in Africa.
These educational resources can be used in conjunction with the "7 Billion" app from National Geographic, which features all the content from the magazine series in an app for iPad. "7 Billion" is available for download on the Apple App Store.
