Idea for Use in the Classroom

As a class, discuss viral infections, viral vectors, and the life cycles of mosquitoes, which are common viral vectors. Next, have students use the map to analyze patterns and interpret data to provide evidence for relationships between infectious diseases, mosquitoes, and climate. Have them use the map to identify current hot spots of mosquito-borne illnesses. Ask students what these areas have in common and why climate change could lead mosquitos to expand their range. Then have students use the map to select a species of mosquito and a region of the world to research and report on in more depth.
