The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship (GTF) is a professional development opportunity for pre-k–12 educators made possible by a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and the National Geographic Society. An annual competitive application process is used to select educators and host them aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ voyages for a life-changing, field-based experience.

These exemplary educators complete a series of deliverables that enable them to transfer their onboard experience into new ways to teach students and engage colleagues. Through this experience, they bring new geographic awareness into their learning environments and communities.

Fellows also take on a two-year leadership commitment to support educators with National Geographic. Throughout their commitment, Fellows may be asked to conduct webinars, participate in meetups, and serve as a mentor to other educators.

The program is named in honor of Gilbert M. Grosvenor, Chairman Emeritus National Geographic Society in recognition of his decades-long work supporting pre-K–12 teachers and promoting geography education across the U.S. and Canada.

Nichole Von Haden
2014 Grosvenor Teacher Fellow
Antarctic Expedition

Since becoming a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow in 2014, Nichole Von Haden has moved from her bilingual middle school classroom into leadership roles within the Madison Metropolitan School District, where she served for three years as a mentor for new educators in K-12 classrooms and currently as the interim Assistant Principal at Hamilton Middle School. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship enhanced Nichole's passion for multilingual education, integrated curriculum, and polar studies, and she is excited to continue sharing resources and instructional design approaches with her staff, the Madison community, and beyond.

Coleman Eaton III

Arctic Expedition

Coleman is a physics, chemistry, and environmental science educator at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta, Georgia. He plans to create a marine science class and a marine science club at his school to connect students to water sources and help them understand their impacts on water both locally and worldwide. He is working with the greenhouse staff on campus to build curriculum to support agricultural learning environments. He has a passion for students and works tirelessly to see them excel in future endeavors.

Karuna Skariah

Galápagos Expedition

Karuna Skariah, a National Board Certified Teacher originally from Nepal, is an instructional coordinator and teacher of talented and gifted elementary students in Robert Goddard Montessori pre-K–8 School in Prince George's County Public Schools, Maryland. Karuna is a doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California, holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, and teaches a physics-based, multidisciplinary curriculum focused on real-world application. Karuna, a National Geographic Certified Educator and Certification Ambassador, recently joined former Secretary of Education John King’s delegation as a teacher-leader to attend the International Summit on the Teaching Practice in Berlin, Germany. She was also a finalist for  the Prince George's County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 2017. The Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship has served to enhance Karuna’s teaching by connecting both teachers and students to geographic inquiry and global education.
