Andrew Revkin is an award-winning journalism innovator who has spent more than 43 years reporting on environmental challenges and choices, mostly for The New York Times. He began covering global warming in 1988 and never stopped, filing groundbreaking dispatches from the North Pole, Amazon rainforest, White House and beyond. A 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship helped him launch his pioneering Dot Earth blog at The Times — which in 2011 became the first blog to win a National Academy of Sciences communication award.

His five books include The Burning Season, a prize-winning biography of slain Amazon forest defender Chico Mendes that was the basis for the Golden-Globe-winning 1994 HBO film of the same name. He has also written several book chapters on climate and the media and speaks frequently on communication innovation. He has also worked at ProPublica, Discover Magazine, the Los Angeles Times and Science Digest.

Revkin’s influence has spread beyond the news media. From 2010 through 2016, he served on the Anthropocene Working Group, the expert body commissioned to weigh evidence humans had become such a force for planetary change that our species is creating a new geological epoch. Revkin has built programs and courses fostering environmental-communication impact at Columbia University, Pace University and the National Geographic Society, where he has been a member of the Executive Committee for Research and Exploration since 2018.

In spare moments he is a performing songwriter whose music has been featured on NPR, has opened shows for artists including Don McLean and Dar Williams, and was a frequent accompanist of Pete Seeger through the legendary folk singer’s last 20 years.

His passion for journalism grew out of a 17-month, 15,000-mile journey he undertook from New Zealand to Yugoslavia from 1979 through 1980 as first mate on a circumnavigating sailboat, the Wanderlust.
