Cities are essentially large concentrations of people and buildings. They can be sprawling, like Mexico City and Los Angeles; extremely densely populated, like Tokyo and London; or relatively small, like Vancouver. In ancient civilizations, cities arose as hubs for trade and quickly became centers of power, wealth, production, ideas, and culture. Today, complex infrastructures of public transportation, municipal services, local government, residences, industry, and business support the modern city.
